Welcome to St. Mary's Church

At St. Mary’s Church we extend a warm welcome to all, young and old, to worship with us on a Sunday and to join us at our fortnightly midweek communion.

Sunday Services

We try to cater for everyone with varied services through the month, all held on a Sunday at 11.15am. Our Family Service on the 1st Sunday of the month is based on ‘Service of the Word’ and is the least formal of our services. It normally lasts about 45 minutes. Our Matins Service on the 3rd Sunday of the month is traditional and often, when led by our Reader, will have sung responses as we as sung canticles. On the 2nd and 4th Sunday, we have Holy Communion (Common Worship). All our Sunday services use our pipe organ to lead the hymn singing.

Midweek Communion

St. Mary’s hosts the fortnightly Benefice Communion service at 9.30am on 2nd Wednesday morning of the month. Please see the service rota to check dates. The service is spoken only and normally lasts about 30 minutes.

Choir

We are the only church in the Benefice to have a regular robed choir to help lead worship on the 4th Sunday of the month. Under the leadership of Hilary Jarratt, the choir practice each Thursday afternoon at 2pm in the Church. We always welcome singers to join our small choir, especially tenors and basses. Please contact one of the Church Wardens if you are interested in joining us.

Bells

St. Mary’s has a fine set of six bells which are rung regularly. A change ringing practice is on the 4th Thursday of each month from 7.30 – 9pm. Beginners welcome. A method ringing practice is usually on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 7.30 – 9pm. A good standard of bell handling is necessary for the method ringing..If you are a complete beginner we can arrange some bell handling sessions for you.

We also welcome visiting teams midweek. Please contact one of the Church Wardens if you would like more information.

Coffee mornings

Once a month we open our church for anyone to drop in for a cup of coffee (or tea) and a piece of cake. Homemade cakes are always on sale and proceeds from the morning go towards the upkeep of the church. Please check the web site calendar for our next coffee morning, which is normally held directly after the Benefice midweek communion serviceon the 2nd Wednesday of every month.
